Happy Halloween!
I don’t work with horror much, it’s not a genre I enjoy, but as I have mentioned before, the line between horror and humor can be a fine one. Sometimes a story that was probably written as a light-hearted approach to social critique strikes genuine terror into me. This is one of those times. The fine folks at Escape Artists Inc. did not publish this as a Halloween piece, and obviously saw it as speculative fiction, not horror, otherwise they would have published it through PseudoPod rather than Escape Pod.
But it horrified me.
On the Fringes of the Fractal is also a well-told story, with a brief introduction from the publisher; if you stop the podcast at the end of the story itself, it’s 32 minutes and 40 seconds long. I enjoy listening to the whole podcast of course, which in this case is just a few minutes more, a total of 35:15.
What did you think of it? Can you guess why I might find it scary instead of funny? Let me know in the comments.
